About the project

The aim of the project is to improve the didactic process in the area of teaching architecture and strengthen the links between university centres. The starting point for formulating the project results was the analysis of social and spatial phenomena that in recent years accompanied the development of mass tourism in historic city centres. The global nature of the unfavourable phenomena that accompanied the expansion of mass tourism has resulted in the impoverishment of the functional programme, the „McDonaldisation” of space, the deterioration of the quality of public spaces and the housing environment in areas of historical value, which threatens cultural heritage and requires intervention. The experience of the pandemic and the temporary complete desertion of historically valuable areas in cities have revealed the threats that functional monoculture poses to urban space. Rethinking and redefining the way of using such areas with respect for local cultural identity and in accordance with the principles of sustainable development is one of the important tasks in the project. The sequence of didactic activities, courses and trainings within the project aims to develop a catalogue of recommendations for spatial interventions that would achieve the above-mentioned objective. The historic centres of Krakow, Florence, Athens and Marrakesh were selected to conduct studies, analyses and study projects. As part of the project, innovative didactic models will be developed and tested, including combinations of teaching forms using modern technologies useful in distance and hybrid education. Based on them, a sequence of didactic modules will be built, which will consist of pilot course projects, student workshops, a series of webinars, courses and trainings. An important result of the project will be a catalogue of guidelines for sustainable design in the areas of historic city centres in the face of new social, economic and technological challenges, developed on this basis. The tasks will be carried out in international teams in the mentor-student system and in specialist groups composed of staff representatives from cooperating Universities. An important objective of the project is to improve the quality of education in the field of issues related to sustainable development and to link the educational offer of universities more closely with the needs of the
labor market. These objectives will contribute to: reducing socio-economic differences, supporting studies on sustainable development at Polish and partner universities and increasing the role of universities in implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
